Castel di Sfacia

Situated on the cliffs in Chora Sfakion, the Castel di Sfacia majestically overlooks the Libyan Sea. Stemming from the Venetian era, this fortress serves as a testament to Sfakia’s vibrant history, especially given its involvement in numerous battles and pivotal events over the ages.

Initially, the Venetians constructed the Castel di Sfacia in the late 13th century. Strategically, its prime location was specifically chosen not only to ward off potential pirate attacks but also to oversee and maintain control over key maritime routes. Today, even though a significant portion of the fortress lies in ruins, those who visit can undeniably feel its storied past. Importantly, during the tumultuous times of Crete’s resistance against the Ottoman Empire, this fortress assumed a pivotal role, acting as both a sanctuary and a central gathering spot for the local populace.
